A 3-Step Resolution Solution to Live in Bliss in 2006!
Happy New Year!
I’m sure some of you reading this made resolutions this year. I wish you great success in keeping them! If you’ve tried to stick to resolutions and find you just can’t make them happen, forget about them by the summer, or want to be sure you keep them, try a different approach this year! As your Life Architect, I recommend using this 3-Step Resolution Solution to increase the odds of your success.
By definition, a resolution is a mental state of mind a decision to act. We often stop at thinking of resolutions without determining or doing the necessary actions to keep them. What do you mean you will be “in shape” or “less stressed”? Is it realistic to be able to workout daily”? Mental commitment is critical, but until we act, we will not see the effects of our mental efforts. As a result, we either are disappointed by the end of the year or just go about our lives doing relatively the same old thing year after year. My New Year’s wish is that instead, you live in bliss in ‘06! So let’s get to that 3-Step Resolution Solution…
Resolution Solution Step #1 Start by Being SMART
With a resolution in mind, use these questions to define your actions in terms of SMART Goals.
Self-Directed - What is a step I want to take to optimize my life?
Measurable - How will I know I met this goal?
Action-oriented - What do I need to do to enact this goal?
Realistic - Can I meet this goal given how I will measure my success or in this time frame?
Time-framed What day will I meet this goal?
For instance, if your resolution is to take better care of yourself, then it is critical that you set a SMART GOAL to measure how you would know you are doing this. Perhaps it is measured by treating yourself to something you often feel you can’t afford. A SMART goal might be each month I will save and use $120/month for… a massage, spa treatment, private golf lesson … by taking lunch to work 3 times a week.
Resolution Solution Step #2 Make a Pact to Act
With your SMART goal set, make a pact to act to keep it. Write the action steps to meet your goal. Sign that you will act according to your pact and have someone witness it. You are likely act on the pact if someone knows about it!
For the goal above, the action steps may be: add lunch items to a grocery list, pack lunch at night and put $10 in a jar 3 times a week.
Resolution Solution Step #3 Build a Support Fort
To optimize success, surround yourself with supportive people and features in the places you spend time. To determine what you need for support, answer the following questions. Who do you need to ask to support you? What equipment, reorganization or modifications do you need in order to follow through? Does it make sense to hire an expert to expedite the process? Would changing your routine allow you to be more successful?
Building on the example, tape a spa or golf course brochure to the savings jar and keep it visible. Enlist the support of those you lunch with - invite them to have BYO-Lunches with you.
To sum it up, define your resolutions, commit to them and surround yourself with support and you will Live in Bliss in ‘06!
