Staff Spotlight

Welcome to our newest newsletter feature, the Staff Spotlight. This column will serve to introduce some of our top people – from bartenders and entertainment crew to chefs and water sport staff - who help make your Couples’ experience memorable. In each newsletter we’ll highlight three employees, one from each resort, and they’ll share some of their favorite Couples’ memories with you. Plus, each one will answer the all-important question: “If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only bring three items, what would they be?” Read on to find out.

Ulyses Davis, Couples Ocho Rios
Our veteran in today’s staff spotlight, breakfast cook Ulyses Davis, has been at Couples Ocho Rios for 20 years. This Gemini was born June 5, 1965, is from Hanover, Jamaica and now resides in St. Mary. You’ll find him in the kitchen every morning making you a hearty breakfast to start your day of fun and relaxation at COR. If you ask this cook his favorite food, the traditional Jamaican dish of saltfish and ackee is his response, and he’ll happily serve you up a taste.

“I love my job – love talking to the guests,” he says. His most memorable guest experience was when a couple at the resort chose to extend their vacation an extra week due to the extra attention that Ulyses paid to them – with a nickname like ‘First Class’ we’re not surprised.

On Ulyses’ day off you’re sure to find him relaxing at the beach and if that beach were a deserted island and he could only bring three items, his requests: matches, a lady and, of course, Red Stripe Beer. Yeah, Mon!

Paul Nakia Mullings, Couples Negril
25-year-old Paul Mullings is hard to miss if you stay at Couples Negril – that’s because he’s the entertainment coordinator. You’ll regularly find him organizing games or being the MC at the nightly cabaret shows and doing whatever he can to make sure everyone enjoys their stay. This is the perfect job for Mullings since it’s constant interaction with guests, and his favorite part of working at Couples is meeting people, learning about their different cultures, and of course, performing.

Throughout the 2 1/2 years Paul has worked at Couples Negril, one memory stands out in his mind… “One Christmas I dressed as Santa Claus and a fairly large gentleman sat in my lap and I fell as a result!” When not dressing as Santa, Mullings enjoys listening to music (Bob Marley is his favorite), playing music (he plays guitar, drums and flute), reading and learning new languages. Affectionately known as ‘Mr. Articulate’, he’s studying French and hopes to one day visit France and put his linguistic skills to work. His three item wish list for a deserted island: his guitar, books & food.

Dwayne Williams, Couples Swept Away
No Jamaican vacation is complete without a few daiquiris or rum punch cocktails enjoyed on the beach or poolside, and the man to serve them to you is bartender Dwayne Williams. For four years Dwayne has been serving up liquid fun and making sure guests keep the smiles on their face.

Dwayne’s favorite part about being a bartender at Couples is getting the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and learn about their culture and languages. He especially loves making that special connection with guests and remembers one evening in particular at the Piano Bar… “A couple was very emotional because they had to depart the following day,” he recounts. “When I arrived to work the next night they had left a note for me telling me how much they would miss me and my drinks.”

When not at work Dwayne enjoys reading, playing cricket and football (that’s soccer to you Americans) and going to the movies (Man of Honor is his favorite flick). Williams takes the practical approach for his three essentials on a deserted island: water, food and clothing.
