FAQ

This FAQ will help you answer many questions about COR - Couples Ocho Rios.

We want to make your trip as easy as possible, so that you will know what to expect and do not miss out on anything. We started this after we returned from our sixty-second trip to Couples Ocho Rios; we will update as time goes on. Keep in mind that event availability and times may vary during your stay.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT COUPLES OCHO RIOS

What are the differences between the various room categories?

There are 206 rooms and spacious suites.  The regular rooms are all the same except for the view.  You will have a garden view and ocean view. The patio or balcony has two chairs and a table.  All rooms have king size bed, A/C, ceiling fan, satellite TV, telephone, CD player & radio, shower, bath, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, coffee maker and in room safe (approximately 10" x 5" x 6").

Return to FAQ List

What should we pack?

Let’s start with clothes!  You should pack lightweight cotton clothes due to the heat and humidity. If you are planning on eating at Le Gourmet, the French restaurant which is formal and elegant, men need to wear a nice shirt with a collar, long pants and closed toe shoes (no sandals) while women would need dresses, nice blouse & skirt or a nice pants outfit, women's dress sandals are acceptable.  No swimwear, tank tops, etc.  For evening meals other than at Le Gourmet, shorts with a nice shirt/blouse and shoes/sandals will be fine.  For breakfast and lunch you can wear shorts, top and shoes as well as swimwear with a cover-up we seen people being asked to go and put a shirt on to eat lunch at the buffet).  The beach grill is much more casual; swimsuits are common although if you wear a “skimpy” suit, shorts or a sarong would be appropriate.  Of course you can dress up as much as you like at any of the meals.  All other times normal summer and swimwear attire. If you plan to go horseback riding long pants are recommended.  For golfing, typical golf club attire is required.  Note:  if you plan to go into town or tour the countryside it is not appropriate to wear only beach attire.  Be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen as the sun is very strong; plan to use it even if you already have a tan.  Your normal toiletries, prescription drugs, various OTC medicines for headaches, upset stomach, etc. and aloe for sunburns or sun dried skin.  Take a camera with plenty of film; if you have a digital camera have rechargeable batteries or plenty of extra batteries and be sure your memory card is of sufficient size.  A waterproof disposable camera is suggested if you plan to parasail, snorkel, scuba dive, swim with the dolphins at Dolphin Cove, or go on the Catamaran cruise.  You can buy many of these items at COR but it is somewhat expensive.  If you like to read on the beach, take paperback books or magazines; avoid bringing hardback books due to the weight (and potential damage from water) and  you can always leave the paperback books behind to make room for souvenirs, coffee, rum, etc.  A small soft-sided suitcase that you can fold up and pack in your large suitcase would come in very handy for items that you will purchase to bring home.

NOTE:   Pack a carry-on with a change of clothes for both, swim wear and cover-ups, your normal toiletries, any medication that you might be on, various OTC medicines for headaches, upset stomach, etc.  This way if the checked luggage gets lost or does not make a transfer you will at least have something to change into.  We have met several couples at many different times that checked everything.  They arrived at Mobay and did not get their luggage for many days.  This is the airline’s responsibility and the resort has no control of this.  In sixty-two trips we have never had late luggage because we only take carry-ons.

Return to FAQ List

What should we wear to the resort?

Wear lightweight, comfortable clothes and shoes.  Even if you get cold on the airplane, plan on wearing shorts.  You are going to the tropics and it is very warm and humid.  A/C at the airport and in many of the buses/vans is not as efficient as back in the States.  You will be much more comfortable wearing shorts once you arrive in Jamaica.

Return to FAQ List

Should we bring beach towels and/or floats?

No, COR provides lounge chairs, cushions/floats and beach towels.  There will be two beach towels in your room upon arrival.  The towels can be exchanged for clean, dry ones from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm at the water sports department on the beach.  At the end of your stay, turn your towels in and they will give you a receipt that you must show at checkout (or pay $15/towel!).

Return to FAQ List

Should we bring large insulated mugs?  I heard that the glasses are small.

No.  Couples’ Policy- Drinks are to be served in glasses or cups provided by Couples Resort.  (Management on October 12, 2004 restated this policy.)  Besides, the glasses at the bars are standard size that you would get in the States.  When you are on the beach or by the pool, it is not far to go to the bar.  There is a swim up bar with stools, snacks on the au natural island.  Service is quick and it is fun talking to the bartenders.

Return to FAQ List

We heard that it rains a lot, should we bring an umbrella?

It can rain everyday in the afternoon normally between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm, at least in July when we usually visit.  Normally at that time of the day you are on the beach or in the pool or at the bar and most of the time it is only for a few minutes.  It is up to you, but in sixty-two trips we never needed an umbrella.

Return to FAQ List

How much money should we bring?

It will depend upon how much shopping and off site excursions such as tours, horseback riding, golf, Margaritaville, Dolphin Cove, etc that you will do.  Anything you would buy at COR you can charge to your room and pay with a credit card upon checkout.  Most of the off site tours that you would arrange through COR you can charge to a credit card.  Most of the stores in town and at the airport take credit cards.  The shops at the craft park normally require cash.  You can always get money from the bank at COR.

NOTE: When shopping in town, you will find stores that will charge a fee for you to use your credit card.  It’s up to you what you do, but if this happens we either pay cash or walk out to another store.

Return to FAQ List

Do we need to exchange US dollars for Jamaican dollars?

No, US money is acceptable currency in Jamaica.  In fact, most items are priced in US dollars.  Therefore, do not waste your time and money with currency exchange.  In fact when you buy something, if you use Jamaican Dollars (J$) the store will “convert” the J$ to US$ at a premium, i.e. a service fee.  Do have small bills ($1 & $5) ready for tipping.

Return to FAQ List

If we come from a country other than the US do we need to exchange our currency for J$?

You have to exchange it for either J$ or US$.  We would recommend exchanging your currency into US$ since most items are priced in US$.  This way you can avoid any unnecessary conversions. (see above question)

Return to FAQ List

Can we use traveler checks?  Where do we exchange them?

Yes.  You can exchange them at the airport, banks, and some stores as well as at COR.  They will be converted into J$, again at a fee.  Depending upon where you exchange the traveler checks, the fee could be 10% to 20% above the official exchange rate.  We recommend bringing 200 US$ or convert your currency into 200 US$ with some being small bills for various off site tipping.  Then use your credit and/or debit card as much as possible.  If you are not from the

US, the purchase price will be 1% to 3% above the official international exchange rate by using a credit card.  This is the best possible exchange rate that you can obtain.  (see note under “How much money we should bring?”)

Return to FAQ List

Does COR charge a deposit to your credit card?

When you check in, they will place a $250 hold on your charge or debit card to cover incidentals that you may charge to your room such as photos, film, suntan lotion, etc.  If you do not charge anything, then nothing is actually put onto your card.  If you do not have either a charge or debit card, then they will ask for $250 cash deposit.  All hotels in the US do the same thing upon check in.

Return to FAQ List

Which credit cards does Couples Ocho Rios accept?

Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover.

Return to FAQ List

Do we need passports?

To enter Jamaica a valid passport is required (starting January 7th 2007)

Be sure to secure these documents before you arrive at your departure airport. [Some airlines will not allow you to get on your flight without them]

Citizens of United States and Canada do not require a visa to visit Jamaica.

Other nationalities please contact your local Jamaica Tourism Board office or (www.visitjamaica.com) to verify correct documentation needed.

Return to FAQ List

What do we do after arriving at Mobay airport?

After deplaning, (some flights exit to a skyway, others directly to the tarmac) you will first go through Immigration with the Immigration cards that you filled out for EACH person on the airplane.  After clearing Immigration you will then retrieve your luggage bypassing currency exchange (see currency question above).  After retrieving all your luggage proceed to Customs with your Customs declaration card(s) that you filled out on the airplane); 99% of tourists are only bringing in personal items so in this case proceed to the “Nothing To Declare” lines. Please note that the customs cards are one card per family or one card per person if you have different last names.  To clarify, your customs card must be filled out with the name used on your identification (passport or birth certificate).  This means if you’re married but using a birth certificate or passport with your maiden name, you must fill out a card using your maiden name.  Personal note: Please for the benefit of everyone, fill out the Immigration and Customs cards on the airplane or before you get in line. If the airline does not hand out Immigration & Customs cards during the flight, please ask for them. This has happened to us several times with several different airlines.

Return to FAQ List

What about tipping at the airport?

You don’t have to worry about this until after you clear Customs as you’ll be handling your own luggage until that point.  Once you clear customs you may have several people asking to carry your luggage.  I suggest not doing it as they may carry it literally 10 feet and set it down and ask for a tip.  At this point someone else will ask to carry your luggage.  If you have a lot of luggage you’ll already have it on a cart, so take your own luggage to the Couples desk.  Once you’re ready to board the bus/van, a baggage handler will take the luggage of several people to the bus/van.  Let them handle it, because it can be a long haul to the bus/van.  This person you do tip; $1 per bag is acceptable.

When you arrive at COR, it is up to you but we generally tip the driver a few dollars (we usually give $10.00 for both of us).  Once you step off the bus/van no one gets tipped.  In fact they can get fired for accepting tips.  Anything off the resort, tip as you would in the States.

Return to FAQ List

How do we get transportation to COR?

After clearing Customs you will enter the “arrival area,” ask for the Couples desk.  They will "check” you in.  You will get a numbered luggage tag for each bag; be sure the tag correctly identifies the resort you are visiting.  You may have to wait 15 to 30 minutes until all the couples that arrived at the same time clear Customs.  They have a lounge where you can get beer, water and soft drinks.  They will then transport you to COR by air-conditioned (but not as cool as your car!) bus/van.  Prior to boarding, make sure all your luggage gets loaded onto your bus/van.

Return to FAQ List

How long does the bus/van trip take to COR?

Approximately 90 to 120 minutes depending upon the time of day and day of the week.

Return to FAQ List

What if we arrive early and our room is not ready?

Official check-in is 4:00 pm.  You may be able to get into your room earlier if your room is ready.  The best thing to do is to have your swimwear and cover-ups easily accessible.  This way if you want you can change in the bathroom or if available, hospitality room and go to the beach and/or pool.  Otherwise grab a bite to eat, have a rum punch, relax and have

Return to FAQ List

What do we do with our luggage while we check in and/or wait for our room to be ready?

After arriving at COR, you will proceed to check in.  You are asked to remain and confirm that all of your luggage is unloaded from the bus/van. Until you check into your room, it would probably be best to keep valuables with you.  COR will watch your luggage until you are checked in and your room is ready, at which time they will take you and your luggage to your room.

Return to FAQ List

When are meals served?

Continental breakfast is available on the Patio from 5:30 am to 6:30 am.  If you prefer, you can have a Continental breakfast (only room service available) delivered to your room from 6:30 am to 10:00 am; there are tags on the back of your room door to order this.  Full breakfast is from 7:30 am to 10:30 am; this includes omelets and fried eggs made to order, pancakes, waffles, French toast, bacon, ham, sausage, potatoes, fresh fruits, smoothies, and much more.  Light lunch of casual fare and snacks is served at the Beach Grille from 11:00 am to 4:30 am; including hamburgers, hotdogs, pizza, patties, and chicken (jerked if you like).  The Patio serves a buffet lunch featuring hot and cold dishes, sandwiches, salads, fresh fruits and pastries from 12:30 am to 2:30 pm.  Dinner is served at four restaurants. The Veranda is open from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm serving international cuisine.  Le Gourmet takes reservations with seatings at 6:30, 7:30, and 8:30 Tuesday through Sunday; they serve French & international cuisine.  Reservations are required and are taken up to 3 days ahead.  Reservations at Le Gourmet normally fill up fairly quickly, so book early in your stay.  Personal note: some people don’t want to bother dressing up, but we believe the food and the experience are worth it.  Le Gourmet is closed on Mondays for a private dinner for repeat guests.   During the week there are two buffets Saturday & Monday.

Return to FAQ List

Should we fly from Mobay to COR?

Personal opinion, no…to fly to COR after clearing Customs you would wait to get shuttled over to another part of Mobay airport, wait to board a small airplane for the 15 to 20 minute flight to Boscobel (the airport nearest COR), wait for a van to take you to COR about twenty minutes away.  You may save 15 to 20 minutes.  Is it worth the money and the extra luggage handling?  Only you can decide.

Return to FAQ List

Does COR have Internet access?

Yes.  It is located on the lobby level next to the bank.  There is no charge.  They request you limit your access to 15 minutes at a time if people are waiting.  You must stand to use the Internet, so please check occasionally while you’re in the room to be sure there’s no one waiting.  WIFI is available free of charge.

Return to FAQ List

What about storage of valuables?

Each room has a small safe.  When you check in they will give you a lock and one key.  Do not lose the key, as it will cost you $100.00 to have the lock replaced.

Return to FAQ List

We know alcohol is included -- what kinds of drinks are available?

You can get beer, red and white house wine, various juices and almost any type of mixed drink.  If you can tell them what is in the drink you can most likely get it.  COR has an excellent selection of top shelf spirits.  You can get any of the mixed drinks with or without alcohol.   The tap water is excellent and safe to drink.  You can also get Blue Mountain coffee, said to be the best in the world and various teas.  Be sure to try some of their “specialty” drinks like the Dirty Banana, Hummingbird, etc. There is a book of drinks at the Patio Bar.

Return to FAQ List

Can you get alcoholic drinks before 10:00 am?

At breakfast you have the ingredients to make a Bloody Mary.  Other than this you have to wait until 10:00 am unless you have a suite with a minibar.  Remember, the Piano Bar stays open from the night before until the last guest leaves.

Return to FAQ List

Do we need to sign up/make reservations for anything other than dinner in Le Gourmet?

Yes.  The catamaran cruise, the Bayside Pasta restaurant, horseback riding, golf, shopping, & Margaritaville. Signup is at Guest Services in the lobby. You don’t need reservations for Dunn’s River Falls or shopping trips. Water sports activities include snorkeling, glass bottom boat, wind surfing, sunfish sailing and water skiing; again, you can find the schedule and sign up at the water sports area.  Scuba diving has limited days and times; if you’re not certified you must take and pass a class the day before your dive( if you are certified be sure to take your card with you!)   Check the schedule and sign up at water sports.  Other activities include golf with shuttle departures at 8:00 am and 1:00 pm (green fees included, club and cart rental extra, mandatory caddy fee) and private sports lessons like tennis.  For a complete list of activities attend the COR orientations which are offered twice daily.  They will explain what they have to offer, what needs to be signed up for and show you where everything is. You can also tune into the Couples channel on the TV. The activity schedule repeats every week.  See "Activities at COR" below.  The information is accurate as of July 2004.

NOTE, you should check and sign up for dinner and any activities as soon as possible because many have limited dates of operation and are limited to the number of people.

Return to FAQ List

Can you sign up or make reservations for dinner and activities prior to arrival at CN?

No you can not.  If you make them the day that you arrive or the following morning, you should not have any problems.

May we suntan in the buff?

Sure, at Couples Ocho Rios there is a private "Au Naturel" island for just this. The island is for couples only, no singles allowed and you must be completely nude. We will transport guests who wish to suntan au naturel on a small boat to the island. The island has a bar and beach grill facilities. For those ladies who wish to only go topless at Couples Ocho Rios, you may do so on the pier only. At Couples Negril there is a small semi-private area designated for clothing optional sunbathing on the main beach. Au naturel sunbathing is not permitted at Couples Swept Away. Due to the world-wide popularity of our resorts, it is possible you may encounter some topless sunbathers on the beach, but topless bathing is not permitted in nor around any public swimming pools.

Return to FAQ List

Do you have to be totally nude on the “Au Naturel" Island

Yes.

Return to FAQ List

What if I want a drink while I’m on the island?

There is a swim up bar with food & a bartender.

Return to FAQ List

How private is the island?

The Island is at least 150 yards from the beach and can only be accessed by boat. Regular transportation is supplied by water sports.

Return to FAQ List

Can women go topless in or around the main pool?

No.  Couples’ Policy - Women are not allowed to go topless in or around the main pools at any of the three resorts. (Management on

October 6, 2004 restated this policy)

Return to FAQ List

When is check-out and when do we leave the resort?

Check out is at noon.  You will leave the resort 4 hours ahead of your scheduled departure.  If you leave later than noon, you may be able to use a room to shower and change prior to leaving the resort.  It does not hurt to ask at the front desk.

Return to FAQ List

I heard that you have to pay a departure tax when leaving Jamaica. How much is it and when do we pay?

Currently it is 1,000 Jamaican dollars or $28.00 US dollars.   Check with your travel agent if you booked a package or with your airline if you booked directly.  Many tour packages have already included it.  Many of the airlines include it in the airline ticket price.  I know that Delta, American, and Air Jamaica does.  If it is not included, you will need cash to pay the departure tax at Mobay airport prior to being able to go thru security.

Return to FAQ List

Where is the best place to buy coffee and rum to take home?

Buy your coffee when you go into town on the shopping trip (COR provides transportation to 3 or 4 different areas, one is a craft park).  You should not pay more than $13 to $14 dollars per pound.  Make sure the coffee has the "Coffee Board Seal of Approval" identifying it as Authentic Blue Mountain Coffee.  Keep your coffee receipt if you buy ground coffee because the bag is a hard brick-shaped package.  Buy your rum at the airport as the prices are very competitive and most of the times better than what you get in town, plus they’ll pack it up for you in a carry-on box.  On this trip the prices for Appleton rum were:  Appleton Special $10 per liter, Appleton V/X $12 per liter, Appleton Reserve $12 per 3/4 liter, Appleton Extra $14 per 3/4 liter.

Return to FAQ List

What is the age group?  Is it all young couples?

It depends on the time of year. During our stay in July it was probably half young couples (under 30).  You will not feel out of place if you are not part of the young crowd.

Return to FAQ List

What toiletries does COR provide?

They only provide shampoo/conditioner, bath gel, soap, aloe gel and moisturizer, all in small bottles.  You can buy most items at the COR store at a premium.

Return to FAQ List

Is Ocho Rios safe?  Is Ocho Rios known for violence?

Ocho Rios is safe as long as you use the same common sense that you would in the States.  You would not walk down a dark alley at night by yourself in any city.  Ocho Rios is not known for violence.  Just be aware of your surroundings.

Return to FAQ List

What time zone is Jamaica in?

Jamaica is on Eastern Standard Time 365 days a year. This means they do not turn their clocks back. Therefore, from the first Sunday in April until the last Sunday in October they are one hour behind EST, i.e. 9:00 am in New York means 8:00 am in Jamaica. The rest of the year Jamaica is on the same time as New York.

Return to FAQ List

Is there an ATM at COR?

Yes. In fact there are ATMs near each resort.  In Ocho Rios, ATMs are in town.  All cash will be in Jamaican dollars. Note: If you use a credit card to obtain cash at an ATM, banks treat this as cash advanced.  If you use a debit card your bank may charge you a per transaction fee.

Return to FAQ List

Other information

1) There is one main building with three wings attached.  As you look from the lobby to the ocean, Tower Isle is directly in front of you.

2) The food is excellent. Food is one thing that you do not have to worry about.  Personal note: we often hear people say “this doesn’t taste like (fill in the blank) at home”; well, you’re not home – you’re in Jamaica!  Enjoy their cuisine!  This is part of the experience and fun of traveling.

3) This may sound silly to say, but drink plenty of water throughout the day .  With the heat and drinking alcohol you can get dehydrated easily and before you realize it.  You don’t want to spend a day of your vacation feeling lousy.  ( Again...yes, I learned this from personal experience!)

4) There is a nurse's office with regular office hours at no charge.  If you need medical attention outside the regular office hours a doctor is on call 24 hours.  There is an additional charge if the doctor is called or a prescription is required.

5) The electric current in Jamaica is 110Volts, 50 cycles.  This is similar to the US except your electrical appliance will run a little slower.  You probably will not notice any difference.  No adapters or converters are provided.

6)   Other excursions are offered by local travel companies.  They have an agent at COR to provide info and pricing.  Depending upon your interests, you may want to pay for an off site tour.

7) Make sure COR knows your arriving flight information.  Have your travel agent confirm, call direct at 876-975-4271.  Provide names, dates and flight information.

8) Normally there are no problems with your reservation, but things do happen, as can happen with any hotel reservation.  To make sure check in goes smoothly, have a copy of your travel voucher, receipt and/or confirmation letter from your travel agent, booking agent or Couples.  Also having a copy of your credit card statement showing payments may come in handy.  We book directly with Couples, therefore we ask for a confirming e-mail stating that everything has been paid.  Having the above information with you will help with check in, if there is a problem with your reservation.

9) Once you leave the Couples Arrival area at Mobay and on your way to the buses/vans, you may be asked several times by different people, if you want to buy some drugs.  If you are not interested just say "No Thank You" or just ignore them.  If you are interested, be careful. Drug dealers can work both sides of the street.  Just remember, DRUGS ARE ILLEGAL in Jamaica and you could face fines and/or prison time.  At the very least, if caught you will be detained.  Not a good way to start your vacation.

10) To get information and to book flights between Mobay and Couples Resorts contact Tim Air at http://www.timair.com/

11) Be prepared to hear “no problem” a lot J and remember the phrase “Irie (eye-ree), mon” when someone asks how you’re doing, how your stay is going, etc. as it means “everything’s great”!

12)   For wedding or vow renewal information go to the Couples web site and click on honeymoons and weddings.  It will list items included, documents required, costs, photography and video services with costs, types and costs for passes for people not staying at the resort as well as contact information.

13) This should go without saying, but HAVE A GREAT TIME!!!!  JA MON!
